Betterment
Modernizing wealth management.
Betterment has long been one of the most approachable and trusted ways to invest — a brand that made financial planning feel clearer, friendlier, and more accessible to everyday people. As the company grew beyond its original “automated investing for beginners” story, the identity needed to reflect a far more expansive platform: one now serving investors, financial advisors, and SMBs managing 401(k) plans, without losing the ease and warmth that set it apart. In a world where investing has become part of daily life, people expect financial tools to feel trustworthy, modern, and clear — a balance Betterment is uniquely positioned to own.
Our task was to help the brand express this broader role with more sophistication and flexibility. The system needed to scale from simple, welcoming entry points to the deeper tools, product experiences and guidance that power long-term planning, all while preserving the accessibility that makes Betterment resonate.
We built a refined, dynamic identity designed for a product ecosystem that lives primarily onscreen. Tactile, intentional UI brings clarity to complex decisions; typography introduces personality and confidence; and illustration restores the warmth at the heart of the brand. Together, they form a unified toolkit that elevates Betterment across every touchpoint — from first deposits to retirement conversations.

Illustration
Our illustration system spans a wide expressive range — from panoramic, atmospheric scenes to translucent, highly tactile UI moments — all held together by a cohesive framework. It brings warmth through rich volumetric gradients and thoughtful lighting that complements the brand and product experiences. Dynamic but never overwhelming, the sophisticated aesthetic both informs and inspires clients throughout their financial journey.

Typography
The typographic system introduces a warm, modern serif – Season Mix, crafted by Displaay – to Betterment’s type palette, adding personality without losing clarity. It brings a human, confident tone to the brand at headline and high touch moments, while easily pairing with our harder working sans-serif type kit throughout our brand, product and marketing communications.

Art Direction
The photography and art direction center on candid moments that feel optimistic, grounded, and human. Shot with natural light and warm tones, the imagery reflects Betterment’s belief that financial confidence shows up in everyday life. The result is a image system that feels approachable and real, reinforcing trust while pairing seamlessly with the brand’s calm, modern design language across marketing, product, and editorial touchpoints.
